A traditional school with traditional values where

we aspire, succeed and thrive

Reading

At Terrington St Clement Community School we recognise and value the importance of our learners becoming confident, successful, independent readers. We are keen to work together with you in supporting your child on their journey towards achieving this.  You will find further ideas about how you can support reading at home below.

Our recommended reads provide suggestions for good quality, age appropriate texts.  Visit the main Reading section of our Learners information.

Reading at home

Our learners are provided with a decodable reading text which matches their current Phonics knowledge and development. The expectation is that the decodable text will be read 4 times across the week working on these skills: decoding, fluency and expression. These books will come home on a Monday and need returning the following Monday.   Learners will also have a library book that should be shared at home that week to encourage a love of reading and reading for pleasure. Library books will come home on a Thursday and need returning the following Thursday.

Books are also available on Bug Club to read. Login details have been sent home.

As part of the book bundle, learners will also have a weekly bookmark. Parents/ carers are encouraged to record on this the reading completed at home. On the bookmark we will also share information about the weekly phonics focus and words to practise reading.  The back of the bookmark has sounds to practise and Harder to Read and Spell Words (HRSWs) to practise reading.

Please see below the slides from the Parent drop in read along and Phonics from 10.09.24.
