Reading
At Terrington St Clement Community School we recognise and value the importance of our learners becoming confident, successful, independent readers. We are keen to work together with you in supporting your child on their journey towards achieving this. You will find further ideas about how you can support reading at home below.
Each week we will send home a weekly reading book bundle with your child together with a reading bookmark. Please share the books at home with your child and add any comments to the bookmark. By completing the bookmark you will help your child work towards their reading book badge (some examples of how to complete the bookmark can be found below). To achieve this badge they need to read 20 library books. You can add other books you share at home to the bookmark too.
Reading with your child
Some questions to ask your child whilst reading together.
Before Reading:
- Look at the front cover. What could the book be about? Have you ever been there/done that? Talk about your experience.
- Why did you choose the book?
- What do you think will happen?
During Reading:
- Who are the main characters?
- What do you think will happen next?
- How do you think that character feels? Why? How would you feel in that situation?
- What do you think will happen next?
After Reading:
- Can you retell the story in your own words?
- Do you have any questions?
- What did you enjoy most about the book?
