A traditional school with traditional values

Sports and PE

OfSTED  September 2018 said:

"Extra-curricular activities, including many sporting clubs, contribute well to pupils’ health and physical education (PE) skills. The sport premium provides pupils with opportunities for increasing participation in sporting events. Sports specialists provide guidance and expertise that develop staff’s skills and enthusiasm for teaching PE."

Look at the bottom of the web page to see our curriculum map for the academic year 2016-2017 which outlines what will be covered in PE lessons for each year group.

Also see below for an example of the grids we use to assess pupils in PE.

Mrs Wassell has also helped us to develop links with our local high school. As a result we have a number of Y9, Y10 and Y11 PE leaders who come to our after school clubs and offer guidance to our pupils and also inspire them to want to do well in PE.  They are:

Amber Stannard, Jess Alder, Megan Tonks, Ella Payne, Annabel Brown, Alice Stocker, Gabrielle Clare, Taylor Moore, Rhianna Hanks, Sam Baxter, Matthew Burridge, Charlie Rudland, Tommy Stone, Alfie O'Connor and Micky Pernham-Munro.

Seeing how well the high school leaders worked with our younger children, we decided to train our Y6 pupils to become PE leaders. This year and last our Y6 pupils have taken part in a Sports Leadership award where they have learned how to become good leaders in sport. This then gives them responsibility to help lead younger children at lunch time and after school clubs. We feel in doing this we are also preparing the Y6s for the work they will do at high school. We hope to see them back as confident PE leaders in a few years.

Over the last few year we have widened the range of after school sports clubs to involve as many pupils as possible. This year, we have offered a mini-squash club to Y5 and Y6 pupils and the children thoroughly enjoyed this. During the spring term, Jayne Wassell ran a lunch time badminton club for Y6 and has also developed a link to the West Norfolk Badminton Club for the children to continue playing. In the summer term, Miss Ingham introduced Tri-Golf as an activity for KS1 pupils and they entered a festival. This was a great opportunity for our younger pupils to get involved in a new sport and get the chance to go to their first competition. In June, Mrs Barnes and Mrs Palmer will attend a training session for yoga and will be able to bring back their new skills to share with staff and this will be something that becomes part of our curriculum in the future
